U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel are scheduled to apply lampricides to several waterways in the Keweenaw today. Areas set for treatment include the Trap Rock River and Hungarian Creek, and the area offshore from the Trap Rock River in Houghton County, and Eliza Creek and the area offshore from Eliza Creek in Keweenaw County. Applications are designed to kill sea lamprey larvae burrowed in the stream bottom. Treatment takes about a day. The treatment schedule can be changed if conditions warrant.
Infested tributaries must be treated every three to five years with lampricides to control sea lamprey populations. Lampricides are selectively toxic to sea lampreys, but a few fish, insect, and broadleaf plants are sensitive. Persons confining bait fish or other organisms in stream water are advised to use an alternate water source. Agricultural irrigation must be suspended for 24 hours, during and following treatment.
