Icebreaking operations have begun in Lake Superior. The U.S. Coast Guard began “Operation Taconite” and so far, the cutter Katmai Bay has been put into service on the St. Mary’s River in Sault Ste. Marie, and the cutter Alder is breaking ice near Superior Wisconsin and Duluth Minnesota. As temperatures drop and more ice forms, the Coast Guard will be putting more cutters into service. The Canadian Coast Guard is also cutting ice on the St. Mary’s River and will be chopping ice on its way to Thunder Bay Ontario. The Coast Guard says that some channels may become clogged with ice at times, but so far there are no channel closures to report.
