Labor Day Weekend Travelers Head Off In Record Numbers

It’s getaway day for Michigan holiday travelers, and a record number of them will be on the roads this Labor Day Holiday Weekend, beginning Friday.

AAA Michigan is projecting 1.2 million people in the state will travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend.

That’s a 1.5 percent increase, and the most since 2008.

AAA’s Susan Hiltz says there are several things working in favor of travelers and the state’s tourism industry.

She says the economy is better, meaning people have more money, and gas prices are at their lowest level in the state in over a decade.

The auto club estimates that 89-percent of the 1.2 million people will drive to holiday destinations and four percent will fly.
