Kivela Calls For Prison Kitchen Inspections

New legislation would require prison kitchens serviced by private food vendor, Aramark, be inspected by the county or state.

Bill sponsor, Representative John Kivela, says routine inspections are required at other food service establishments in Michigan and his measure would mandate the same for prison kitchens.

He says it would improve conditions in Aramark serviced prisons, where there have been issues such as maggots in food.

The Philadelphia-based food vendor was fined $200,000 last year for several violations of its $145 million contract with the state.
