WASHINGTON, D.C.- The United States Postal Service has announced today that the Kingsford Mail Processing Center, which was previously scheduled to have their mail sorting operations moved Green Bay in July, will now continue offering a full range of mail processing services through the end of the year.
Congressman Benishek, a native of Iron Mountain, Michigan, has consistently advocated to keep the processing center operational. In 2012, Dr. Benishek helped deliver thousands of petitions to the Post Office opposing the decision to move the postal sorting services to Wisconsin. He has also written the Post Master General to stress the importance of this facility to the Northern Michigan community.
“This facility not only provides jobs to families in the Upper Peninsula, it also is critical to ensuring that rural communities receive their mail in a timely fashion. With so much waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending, I know that there are better places to cut than basic, key services like the delivery of mail,” said Dr. Benishek.
A statement released from the Post Office said, “The decision to defer the next phase of the initiative was based upon operational considerations, and was made to ensure that the Postal Service will continue to provide prompt, reliable and predictable service consistent with the published service standards. The planned consolidation activities will resume in 2016. The Postal Service will continue to implement network efficiencies and to pursue service performance improvements as it has always done.”
