Kings, ‘Dogs in Regional Volleyball Finals Tonight – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball regional finals tonight…

  • In Division Three, Calumet will face Traverse City St. Francis in a match that has been moved from St. Ignace to Sault Ste. Marie. The Copper Kings carry a record of 29-4-2 into the match. The Gladiators are 32-12-3, and are the defending state tournament runners-up. Both teams are unbeaten in best-of-five match play this season. Calumet closed the regular season ranked fourth in the state in the Michigan High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll, and St. Francis was sixth. Coverage will begin at 5:40 in advance of a 6:00 start on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • In Division Four, Hancock will take on Forest Park in a 6:00 match at Baraga High School. The Bulldogs are 23-6-2 overall, with their only two losses in best-of-five set matches to Calumet. The Trojans are 34-4-1 overall, and is unbeaten in best-of-five set play. Forest Park finished the regular season in fifth place in the coaches’ poll, while Hancock was not ranked. In other matches involving U.P. teams…

  • St. Ignace plays Atlanta at Pellston High School. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Hancock-Forest Park match in the quarterfinals next week.

The high school hockey season opens tonight…

  • Houghton plays at Hancock. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

NHL

Simon Edvinsson’s goal 90 seconds into overtime gave the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the Penguins last night. Jonatan Berggren and Patrick Kane scored early in the second period, to give the Wings a lead. Pittsburgh tied it up with a pair of goals off Cam Talbot later in the second. Talbot made 31 saves to earn the 250th victory of his career.

The Wings visit the Ducks tomorrow. Coverage will start at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons couldn’t hold an 18-point lead, and fell to the Bucks 127-120 last night. Cade Cunningham had 35 points and 11 assists. Malik Beasley added 26 points and 10 rebounds. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 59 for Milwaukee. Isaiah Stewart was tossed out of the game after hacking Antetokounmpo early in the third quarter.

The Pistons visit the Raptors tomorrow. Coverage will start at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

In tonight’s NFL contest, the Commanders visit the Eagles. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
