Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Closes Trails Tonight for the Season

Though the Michigan DNR extended the snowmobiling season until April 2, President of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, Ryan LaPorte, said their season will end tonight at midnight. Check to see if your favorite trail is closing tonight or on Sunday.

President of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, Ryan LaPorte said,

“Yeah, the DNR did extend the season up through Sunday, so what is that, April 2nd. We are not, based on private property that the majority of our trails [that] are north of Calumet reside on, and our agreements that are in place with those land owners – or multiple, landowners- do not extend beyond the 31st of March. So, we will not be leaving those gates open, we’ll be headed out tomorrow morning [when] we go out to close those gates up on behalf of those land owners. So. We really their use of the trails and their property to make the trail system happen, but don’t have the ability yet. We’re going to look to the board to extend those trail user agreements as we renew those over the next few years- not all of them were on an annual renewal, so it’ll take us a little bit to get those extended.”

The Keweenaw snowmobile club also participated in the DNR’s ride right campaign.

President of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, Ryan LaPorte said,

“I think it’s prevented accidents across our trail system. We got a good combination of y’know, long straight aways, and a lot of twisty turney ups and downs in our trail system. So I think it’s had a positive impact on the riders in the region. And to see that and practice it if they’re visiting the area.”

The club is also holding a 50/50 raffle fundraiser, and a special raffle fundraiser- where you have the chance to win $15000.

Buy your ticket by April 7 to enter, and the drawing will be on April 11. The proceeds of the special raffle will go towards the groomer barn, and the proceeds of the 50/50 raffle will go towards the trail grooming costs.
