A group of conservationists are looking at establishing a Keweenaw National Marine Sanctuary.
Commissioner Tony Pintar introduced the idea to the Houghton County Board of Commissioners at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday.
The sanctuary would encompass Lake Superior waters off the shores of parts of Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
The sanctuary would not include the Portage Canal or inland lakes.
The effects of establishing such a sanctuary was unclear in regards to property owners and recreational users of Lake Superior.
Pintar said anyone interested in getting involved should contact the Houghton-Keweenaw Conservation District.
