Michigan State University’s largest pre-college program, 4-H Exploration Days have a delegation in the Western UP. The program is designed to increase a participant’s confidence, independence, responsibility, accountability, decision making, and time management skills. They also improve on their communication, team work, leadership, and citizenship skills. Students develop social and academic skills that are necessary for a successful transition to college and life as an adult. Eight Keweenaw County youth participated in the program among 37 peers, from ages 11 to 19, at Michigan State University’s East Lansing campus. With a choice of over 200 sessions like horticulture, robots, writing, detective work, pickleball, and atomic nuclei, the youths partook in activities designed to explore their passions, hobbies, possible career paths and other cultures. While there, the entire Western Upper Peninsula delegation enjoyed a guided hands-on tour of the MSU Veterinary Nursing Clinical Skills Laboratory, where they got to try common veterinary skills such as intubating, palpating, wound stitching, and more.
