Keweenaw Bike To Work Day Is Friday

Good thing there isn’t any snow in tomorrow’s forecast because it’s Keweenaw Bike to Work Day!

The event is coordinated by the Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE) to raise awareness of bicycle commuting as a transportation alternative, as well as bike safety and the importance of sharing the road.

There are eight rest stops that people are welcome to stop at throughout the area.

Six stops will be open from 7am-9am in the morning and 4pm-6pm in the afternoon.

-Houghton Waterfront Trail east of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge

-Near the Michigan Tech Outdoor Adventure Program building on Townsend Drive.

-Western U.P. Health Department parking lot near the multi-use trail in Hancock.

-Calumet on Highway 41 near the CLK School in the morning and at Cross Country Sports on Oak Street in the afternoon.

-Lake Linden Park gazebo.

-The BP station in South Range.

A seventh stop will be at the corner of Sharon Avenue and Portage Street in Houghton and will be staffed during the peak hour of 7:30am-8:30am.

This year, there will also be an eighth rest stop outside of Barkell Elementary School in Hancock from 7:30am-8:15am, where students who walk or bike to school can stop for snacks and kid-friendly bike safety information.

Volunteers will be offering free refreshments, bike safety literature, advice on bike commuting routes and gear, and in some cases, simple bike fixes like topping off tire pressure and checking brakes.

There is no fee to participate and no registration required.  For more information, visit KB2WD.org.
