A Republican candidate for president says he wants Michigan to fix its roads and he has a plan that could help.
During a Michigan campaign stop, Ohio Governor John Kasich jokingly asked that the state fix its roads because he’s tired of hearing about it.
But he wasn’t joking when he talked about cutting the 18.4 cent federal gas tax to just pennies, so states could raise their own gas taxes to help pay for road repairs.
Kasich says the reduced fed tax would be used to maintain interstate highways. Not build new ones.
He says we need to stop sending money to Washington where they continue to scoop stuff off the top.

Republican presidential candidate, Ohio Governor John Kasich, says his road to the White House will include more stops in Michigan.
Finishing up a two day campaign swing through the Great Lakes state, Kasich told a group in the Lansing area, as president he would balance the budget, build up the military and try to move more federal programs out of Washington D.C. and back to the states.
Kasich also says he will likely return to Michigan as he continues to campaign, because he thinks it is an important place to be.
Kasich is one of several presidential candidates to visit Michigan this summer including Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Hilary Clinton. Jeb Bush made a stop in the spring.
