Junttila Family Reunion This Weekend

A local family with roots that run deep in the Copper Country will be coming together again this weekend.

The Junttila family reunion currently takes place every five years at their family property outside of Gay near Big Traverse Bay.

The line can be traced back to 1909 when Gustav Junttila made his trek from Finland to the Keweenaw and then worked in the Centennial Mine near Calumet.

This is the seventh time the Juntila family has gotten together.

Organizer Bruce Benda says the sheer size of the family is the main reason why this particular reunion stands out.

This will be no ordinary family picnic. Festivities will include a 5k run, a pancake breakfast, a sauna run, a salmon and pork chop dinner…and then conclude with an evening music fest on the family property.

Bruce is the father of “Superior” film director, Edd Benda, so the entire family will also be enjoying the film.
