A judge has dismissed a request for a temporary restraining order to prevent teachers in Detroit from staging any more sick outs.
The judge says there wasn’t any evidence the union was behind the sick outs, which have intermittently closed schools over the last few weeks.
Marshall Widick, an attorney representing the teachers union, says teachers are free to act on their own to advocate for a cause, which is what has been taking place.
The district, however, likened the sick outs to a strike as have some state lawmakers.
Most recently a state senator introduced bills aimed at preventing teachers from staging future sick outs.
The protests come as lawmakers are weighing a plan pushed by the governor to get Detroit Public Schools out of debt, which would cost the state $715 million.
