As the debate continues over guidelines proposed by the Michigan Board of Education regarding LGBT students, one Democrat candidate for the state’s 1st Congressional District is weighing in.
Former head of the Michigan Democratic Party Lon Johnson says State Senator Tom Casperson is jumping the gun on this issue.
Casperson has said he plans to propose legislation to block transgender teens from using bathrooms that do not correspond to their sex.
Johnson warns that similar legislation in other parts of the country hurt business in those areas.
Johnson said local school districts should be able to decide whether they will follow the guidelines or not.
A public comment period on the State Department of Education’s document is open until May 10th.
