Michigan led the nation during the past week, with the largest decline in the number of new jobless claims. It comes the same week that the US Labor Department reports that the number of people seeking benefits fell to its lowest level in more than eight years. Michigan reported 6800 fewer jobless claims, due to fewer layoffs in manufacturing. California led the country in the most new claims, at more than 14,400. Naitonally, weekly applications for jobless aid dropped by about 19,000, to 284,000. It’s at its lowest level since February of 2006.
