Inmates At U.P. Prison Protest Over Food

Inmates at an Upper Peninsula prison peacefully protested the quality of the food provided by a state contractor.

Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz says nearly 1,300 prisoners at Kinross Correctional Facility chose not to get meals Monday, a day after inmates left the prison yard 20 minutes early in silent protest of the food quality.

Gautz says it’s the first issue he’s seen in months related to food.

Florida-based Trinity Services Group replaced Philadelphia-based Aramark Correctional Services as Michigan’s prison food vendor last year.

The state did not renew its contract with Aramark after the contractor had been fined for several violations related to kitchen conditions and staff misconduct.
