A familiar face is returning to politics in Houghton County, at least on the planning level.
Former State Representative Matt Huuki was appointed by the Board of Commissioners to serve on the Houghton County Planning Commission at their regular meeting on Tuesday.
The vote was a close one–three to two–with the other applicant interested being local businessman Pete Mackin.
In other business, the board reappointed Commissioner Tim Palosaari as the board’s Vice Chairman.
The board also heard a presentation from Jim Klutts from the Houghton County Office of Veterans Affairs and Veterans Board member Gene LaRochelle.
Their office serves Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
One concern that they had was a proposal by the state to move all payout approvals for the Veterans Trust Fund to a single panel located in Lansing.
It’s a move designed to cut back on administrative costs.
Klutts said that all local offices are against the idea, saying it would take away local control.
