House Panel Examines Bumping Speed Limit

A Michigan House committee is poised to vote this morning on a measure to increase the speed limit on some Michigan roads.

State Representative Peter Pettalia, chairman of a House transportation committee, says under an agreement reached late last year the speed limit would go up to 75 miles an hour on interstates and 60 miles an hour on some state highways.

Initially the legislation called for speed limits to go up to 80 and 65 respectively, but had to be drawn down to get the Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Transportation on board.

Pettalia says the hope is to move the legislation through both the House and Senate and have it signed into law by the time people head off on summer vacations.
