House Dems Want Enbridge Line 5 Shut Down

A pair of Democrats in the Michigan House, along with the Sierra Club, want Enbridge Line 5, an oil pipeline running under the Straits of Mackinac, shut down.

State Representative’s Sarah Roberts and Jeff Irwin are cosponsoring two resolutions calling on the governor and attorney general to stop the flow of oil through the pipeline.

They fear the 62 year old pipeline could leak and want it shut down before something bad happens.

A spokesperson for the attorney general says the pipeline’s days are numbered and that it won’t see many more tomorrows.

However Irwin says Bill Schuette said the same thing 107 days ago and Line 5 still stands.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the governor says an executive order Rick Snyder signed in early September creating an advisory board to oversee the pipeline and prohibit heavy crude oil from flowing through Line 5 are steps he’s taken to protect against a leak.
