House Committee Passes Long-Awaited Teacher Evaluation Bill

A Michigan House committee has approved a revamped bill to change the way teachers and administrators are evaluated in the state.

Thursday’s vote comes after multiple rounds of testimony and a summer filled with back-and-forth negotiations.

State Representative Adam Zemke says the changes made to the bill are all about making a level playing field to empower teachers.

The Ann Arbor Democrat says one of the biggest changes is how teachers are observed in the classroom and how teachers are trained. Feedback for teachers will be more immediate and training will be more frequent.

State Representative Amanda Price, chair of the House Education Committee, says the changes should put the bill back in the governor’s favor.

Rick Snyder told the Michigan Radio Network months ago he didn’t like the direction the bill was going as it veered away from recommendations made by an education work group.
