House Committee Considering Bill to Help Catch Suspects who Hurt or Kill a Police Officer

Michigan lawmakers are looking at a bill to help catch those who injure or kill a police officer.

The legislation would create a Blue Alert System. It would work much like the Amber Alert and inform the public about a suspect involved in an incident when an officer is hurt or killed.

State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker is sponsoring the legislation. She says it will help protect the public and allow for the swift apprehension of violent criminals.

The alert system would be run and maintained by the Michigan State Police.

22 states have already enacted Blue Alert legislation.

The measure, which has already passed the Senate, is in a House committee.
