A Michigan House committee has cleared a pair of bills banning dismemberment abortion in the state, sending the measures to the full House.
Rasheed Durowoju, a first year medical school student at Michigan State University, attended the hearing and says the legislation will do more harm than good.
He says it will tie the hands of doctors who are trying to provide the best care possible for their patients.
But State Representative Kurt Heise, R-Plymouth Township, chair of the House Criminal Justice Committee, says that’s not the intent of the bills.
He says the legislation gives prosecutors a tool to go after a doctor – or group like Planned Parenthood – if they’re using the second term abortion procedure when it isn’t medically necessary.
