House Committee Advances Bill Banning Drones In Some Areas

Legislation cracking down on the recreational use of drones has been broadened to prohibit someone from flying them near utility workers and hazardous waste, telecom, chemical or pharmaceutical facilities.

State Representative Kurt Heise, R-Plymouth Township, is sponsoring the bill and says he also tweaked a planned no-fly zone around state prisons.

Heise says it wouldn’t be illegal to fly a drone near a prison but it would be illegal to interfere with guards or prisoners.

Drones have been used in other states to drop drugs into prison yards, which have caused riots.

The measure also makes it illegal to use a drone to spy on someone or take pictures or video of them.

The bill cleared a House committee today Tuesday and awaits a vote in the full House.
