Houghton’s 50 Years of Work pays off in 2024

Houghton earns the Michigan Municipal League’s Community Excellence Award in 2024. Last Friday award nominations for placemaking projects across the state were chosen between Brighton, Grandville, Oak Park, and Houghton at the annual League conference held on Mackinac Island. City Manager Eric Waara says being chosen as a competitor placed the city among great company. Then to earn recognition from the state and other communities for the incredible work over 50 years to connect Houghton could not be possible without countless volunteers, the Department of Public Works, and residents that make the city a great place to live. Houghton highlighted the city’s continual work to revitalize Lakeshore Drive and the downtown waterfront. Waara adds that the city’s story follows what small groups of people can accomplish with large investments, and what that can do for a community. Houghton is a proud example of work happening in the Upper Peninsula says League of Trustees President Don Gerrie. Congratulations to the city of Houghton.
