Houghton Woman Facing Drunk Driving Charges After Crash With Children In Car

A Houghton woman is facing drunk driving charges after a car crash with her children inside the car.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post were called out to a one vehicle rollover accident on Friday about 10:40 p.m. on Airport Road near M-26.

Police say a passerby came upon the crash and found the vehicle upside down with a young child walking around the outside of it.

The passerby approached the vehicle and heard a baby screaming from inside.

The passerby crawled inside the vehicle and unbuckled the infant who was still secured in the seat and removed her from the vehicle.

The driver then crawled out of the vehicle on her own.

When troopers arrived, they identified the 34-year-old driver as the children’s mother.

She was then arrested on suspicion of Operating a Vehicle While Impaired/Child Endangerment and possession of marijuana.

She was first taken to U.P. Health System—Portage before being lodged in the Houghton County Jail.

The children were released to a family member after being treated at the scene.

The suspect is out on bond and will be arraigned on Wednesday.
