With summer now officially over, it’s that time of the year to get rid of all that trash that’s a little bit harder to put in the city bags. The City of Houghton announced yesterday at the city council meeting that from October 3rd to the 26th, residents can take their leaves, small branches, yard clippings and construction materials to the City Garage and place them in the dumpsters provided. The trash collection will take place on Fridays from 4pm to 8pm and on the weekends from 10am to 4pm. City Manager Eric Waara says the drop-off is self-serve and free to Houghton residents.
And for residents 65 years or older as well as handicapped residents living in single-family homes, the city will accommodate to them too.
To take advantage of this, residents must call the city ahead of time and provide their name and address. Pickup days for those residents are October 10th and 24th.
