Houghton Selects Downtown Development Contractor

The City of Houghton will continue to explore redevelopment of the area currently occupied by the large downtown parking ramp, but only after council members received 45 minutes worth of guidance from citizens at last night’s public hearing.

Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau president Dianne St. Amour, who manages the Calumet AmericInn, was one of several who questioned the need for more hotel rooms…

Others worried about turning the whole project over to one investor…

…the size and height of the buildings in the initial proposals…

… whether or not they fit the character of the city… and whether they preserve appropriate public access to the waterfront. Buck Foltz was one councilor who said he got the message…

In the end, the council voted 5-2 to begin talks with the Veridea Group from Marquette about the project’s future. The two “nay” votes came from councilors who wanted to delay a decision.

City Manager Eric Waara promised that the design process would include many opportunities for public input.
