Houghton Rotary Foundation Awards $22,900 to Copper Shores Meals on Wheels with Proceeds from Keweenaw Brewfest

Good friends, good food, and good brews. And all for a good cause. In the two years since returning, Keweenaw Brewfest, has worked with the Portage Lake District Library and Copper Shores community health foundation’s Meals on Wheels program. Recently the Houghton Rotatory presented over 20,000 dollars to Meals on Wheels, that will help cover startup cost for the new vegetable washing station.

We received $22,900 from the Houghton Rotary and it was just an outstanding example of community support for our program and what we’re doing for the seniors of our community. So the money will be used to develop a produce washing station. So as we’re getting a lot of local produce from the area, salads, greens, you know, beets, potatoes, anything that’s being grown locally that we’re purchasing Sometimes it has to go through a processing stage before we can actually get it into the kitchen, start dicing, cooking, using it, or even storing it for later. So this exterior, this produce washing station will be used to process all that fresh produce that comes in. – Kathleen Harter, Program Director, Copper Shores Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels program director Kathleen Harter adds that the group of Houghton Rotarians connected with the program’s mission of feeding the area’s seniors and providing social opportunities. Recently the Rotary Club of Houghton opened applications for the 2025 Keweenaw Brewfest beneficiary.

And we’ve decided that’s gonna be part of our profile going forward is to have one organization that we’ve selected that will fall into the parameters for getting matching grant money. That being said, we also support other things in our community through the foundation. – Lucinda Enderby, Club President, Rotary Club of Houghton

The Houghton Rotary Foundation will collect applications from area non profits organizations, groups and , community programs before selecting the 2025 Keweenaw Brewfest Beneficiary. Groups that want to learn more about the Houghton Rotary club and Keweenaw Brewfest beneficiaries should contact the rotary with any questions. More information can be found here.
