That’s according to rankings recently released by Bridge Magazine, an online publication that analyzes facets of life in Michigan.
Houghton High School was listed as the best school in a small county with higher incomes.
Dollar Bay-Tamarack High School tops the list of schools in a small county with medium incomes.
For the staff, the award is both exciting and humbling at the same time.
Houghton High School Principal Patrick Aldrich said, “These are statewide awards that start with, of course, our students and their work ethic and the support that we have from the community. Our teachers, it speaks volumes to the effort that our teachers put in each and every day.”
Calumet High School also finished high on the list at number four of schools in a small county with medium incomes.
Bridge Magazine noticed how well Copper Country schools did in their report and wondered, “What are they doing up there that is so different?”
Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Doreen Klingbeil said, “I think, in a community where you have support, where we all work together, our community, our parents, our staff, our students—I think, when everybody works together, then students tend to better academically.”
In all, Bridge Magazine recognized 44 schools as Academic State Champs for 2015.
