Houghton County starting recycling program

Correction: Residential grass was used in a prior version. It should read residential only glass.

Earth Day marks the start of Houghton County’s new single stream recycling effort. Administrator Ben Larson says Waste Management and the Copper Country Recycling Initiative will operate the site, with sorting taking place in Marquette. He says collections will occur mid-week at the transfer station in Atlantic Mine.

We will have a teepee type of bin…what we’ll do is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday every week.

Larson shares a list of accepted items, including flattened cardboard and glass bottles from homes only, not restaurants. He also notes that there are several things not allowed, such as plastic bags. The full list is in the release published below in its entirety.

Director of Operations for Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority, Bradley Austin, will be a guest Sunday on Copper Country Today to further explain the program.

The Houghton County Board of Commission, the County Transfer Station, Waste Management, and the Copper Country Recycling Initiative announce the beginning of drop-off single stream recycling at the Transfer Station in Atlantic Mine. Beginning Thursday, April 22 a “Teepee Bin” for recyclables will be available for patrons who separate recycling items from trash. Those wishing to use this service will be charged a $5.00 Fee for each residential load, and $10 for each commercial (pickup) load. The recycling bin will be available from 8:00 am-4:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only. No recycling services will be available on Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays. Larger loads and initial prices are subject to change and consideration.

Single stream and accepted items for the Teepee include: residential only glass, plastic with the recycling symbol, tin and aluminum cans, cardboard (flattened), and paper. Note: Items must be clean.

The following items are not accepted: plastic bags of any kind, packing foam or Styrofoam (polystyrene), containers that have held toxic material such as motor oil, tissues or paper disposables such as hand towels/paper plates/paper cups/ freezer food boxes. Note: cardboard now will be going into the Teepee, and will require the same payment for disposal. Flyers to help the public understand what is acceptable will be posted on site. The materials listed here will remain as regular materials, and will need to be properly disposed of as regular trash.

All single stream recycling that is collected will be transported to the sorting facility in Marquette by Waste Management. The County encourages recycling, as it will extend the life of the landfill located in Greenland.

The Copper Country Recycling Initiative (CCRI) has arranged a public Zoom meeting for you to meet with Bradley Austin, the Director of the new recycling processor, RECYCLE 906, Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority (MCSWMA). He will introduce their recycling program, offer guidelines and requirements for accepted materials, and answer questions on April 26, 7-8pm via the following Zoom event.
