Houghton County Flood Road Damage Repairs 50% Complete

Seventeen months after the Father’s Day Flood, Houghton County has completed repairs to about half of the roads that were damaged. Houghton County Road Commission Engineer Kevin Harju…

Harju says the latest victory is Paradise Road, where the Pilgrim River bridge has been replaced. The road was reopened several days ago.

While federal money has been made available to help with repairs, Houghton County still needs to come up with $4.5 million in matching funds to take advantage of all of it.

State House Transportation Committee Chair Jack O’Malley toured the Old Mill Road damage last Saturday, with an eye toward getting the state to contribute toward that.

Assuming that happens, Harju says they hope to complete most of the remaining projects next summer. Meanwhile, with county crews hard at work on flood repairs, Harju says some corners have had to be cut…
