According to Houghton County Board of Commissioners Chair Scott Ala, there is a big problem with the county’s retirement plan for county employees. Ala brought up the issue at last night’s board meeting and he says the Municipal Employees Retirement System, better known as MERS, came up with a plan but he doesn’t think the numbers add up. The board decided to get a hold of a representative from MERS and have a special meeting to discuss any questions or concerns any of the commissioners have with the present plan. Also during the meeting, the board approved a county road millage that will be place on the August ballot and considered a request for assistance with a Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall that will be built in Calumet Township.
