UPDATED –
Waterfront redevelopment proposals will dominate tonight’s Houghton City Council agenda.
The Council will hold a public hearing to review ideas and qualifications provided by the Veridea Group, Moyle Development, and Julien Properties.
No specific plan will be considered tonight, but the council could move forward toward a decision about which developer – if any – they wish to work with. City Manager Eric Waara says the development of the final plan will be a lengthy process, with many opportunities for public input. The City of Houghton will try to take a step forward with potential redevelopment of some of the property currently occupied by the large downtown parking decks at a public hearing tonight.
Three developers have submitted concepts for use of the property, which include hotel, residential, retail and parking spaces.
City Manager Eric Waara emphasized that tonight’s hearing is not intended to review and approve any specific plan for the property. Rather, the city is simply trying to choose which of the three developers – if any – it will start working with. Once that decision is made, Waara says there will be a lengthy and open planning process which will include input from the public, business owners, and other stakeholders.
All three developers who have submitted concepts are expected to attend tonight’s hearing. Public comments are welcome, with each individual limited to five minutes. The hearing begins at 5:30 at the City Center, before the regular council meeting.
