It was a busy night for the Houghton City Council yesterday at their bi-monthly meeting. The council held a public hearing and passed an ordinance to make a change to the rental code regarding sleeping rooms. Assistant City Manager Ann Vollrath says it was a neccesary course of action.
The council set another public hearing for another ordinance change, this time for the purchasing policy, to set limits on how much city employees can spend before getting approval from the city manager. That hearing was scheduled for August 27th. The council awarded a bid on a sewer main project on East 7th Avenue and Houghton Avenue to Bill Siler Contracting. The council awarded another bid to Merit Construction for work on coating the west side of the parking deck as a part of its ongoing renovations. The council also approved changes to the union contract which calls for a 2% wage increase as well as approved a change of the medical provider from Blue Cross Blue Shield to Consumer’s Mutual.
