Taps in some homes will be on for the next two months. The City of Houghton maintains a comprehensive list of service lines, those going from the road into a residence, that are prone to freezing. For customers at those homes, they will be receiving packets in the mail in the coming days explaining how to qualify for a credit if they let their water lines run through the rest of winter.
If you are included in the program, you must contact the city with the date that you start letting your water run. When you receive the go-ahead to turn your tap off in the spring, you are required to call again and register that date. The city automatically credits homes for 700 cubic feet of extra usage from January to March that they will not be charged for.
Other tips to prevent freezing are included in the brochure. They include draining water from the sprinkler system and insulating external pipe sleeves.
