Officers from nearly 150 agencies in 26 Michigan counties kicked off a campaign Tuesday to pay special attention to drunk drivers over the Fourth of July holiday period. The campaign attempts to decrease alcohol-related traffic deaths and serious injuries, which are the highest during the summer, with July and August the worst months. However, officers will not ignore any other traffic violations that may occur. During last year’s Fourth of July drunk driving crackdown, 115 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in Michigan. Alcohol was involved in 40-percent of the 19 deaths in Michigan over the Fourth of July holiday period last year.
