Highland Copper thinks it may be able to pull more than 100-million tons of copper out of an area it’s been exploring in Keweenaw County. The 543-S project is located west of Gratiot Lake. An Initial Resource Estimate released yesterday shows a potential yield of 109-million tons of copper, and a quarter-million ounces of silver. Highland estimates production costs at 75-dollars per ton, not including mine development costs. The estimate is based on trucking ore to a processing facility in White Pine. Highland is also exploring a second deposit in Keweenaw County, north of Bete Grise, and hopes to have an Initial Resource Estimate prepared by the end of the year. If both projects move forward, a second facility may be built in Keweenaw County to process the output of both mines. Highland says it has spent more than 11-million dollars on its explorations in Keweenaw County, and hopes to have a feasibility study for establishing mining operations completed by October of 2015.
