Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein told a gathering in Lansing Thursday that its a smart move for employers to hire disabled persons because they place so much value on just being offered a position.
The event was a Lansing stop in what is called the “Hidden Talent Tour” hosted by Bernstein and Lt. Governor Brian Calley.
Bernstein is blind, and Calley’s daughter is afflicted with autism.
They’re trying to raise awareness about the employment of disabled people. Bernstein says a disabled person has “resilience, inner strength and inner spirit,” adding that the disabled are grateful for being given a chance “because so often we’re not.”
Calley says creating a more inclusive employment atmosphere for disabled people will be beneficial to both employee and employer.
It’s estimated that there’s a half-million working-age Michigan residents with disabilities who are currently not working, and at least 40 percent of them have a college degree or some college education.
