Hancock Sets One-Way Streets

Hancock Sets One-Way Streets – May 22, 2014 – Todd VanDyke

Sections of two Hancock streets will soon be limited to one-way traffic. Last night, the City Council voted to limit traffic on White Street between Reservation and Pine Streets to one way going uphill… and traffic on Tezcuco Street from Quincy to Hancock Streets to one way going downhill. The main goal is to reduce the number of drivers who use White Street as a shortcut to and from Quincy Hill… instead of following the US-41 trunk line around the west edge of downtown. White Street is currently experiencing more traffic than it was built for. At a public hearing, several residents expressed support for the changes. Mark Johnson from Gartners Furniture was concerned that the only way for trucks to get to his loading dock is to travel up Tezcuco… against the new traffic pattern. Council members later said they felt an arrangement could be made to accommodate Gartners’ deliveries. City Manager Glenn Anderson said it will take about two weeks to put signage in place and implement the changes.
