Hancock Police Chief Gives Update To City Council

Hancock Police Chief Wayne Butler gave his quarterly report at Wednesday night’s Hancock City Council meeting.

He explained seasonal crime fluctuations, saying most numbers decrease as the weather gets colder.

Butler also extended hopes of the Upper Peninsula Drug Enforcement team having more area involvement in the future. The Hancock police are working with surrounding areas and the Michigan State Police to raise money to assign two people to the team in hopes that UPSET can expand and have a more local focus. Currently the nearest UPSET team is in Marquette.

In completed training: Hancock officers received weapons training with their new firearms and one officer received interview and interrogation training.

Finally, Chief Butler gave an update on the reported assault allegedly involving Finlandia University students at a residence on Ryan Street. The police have wrapped up the investigation and the case has been turned over to the prosecutor’s office.

In other business, City Manager Glenn Anderson gave an update to the city council on the upcoming MDOT streetscape project. The designs have been finalized to include guard rails, retaining walls, pedestrian lanes, LED street lamps and a traffic light at the Lincoln-Quincy street intersection. Anderson said the traffic light will be essential come construction season, when traffic is expected to greatly increase through the intersection.
