Hancock Plans Civil War Veterans Commemoration

Bells will be ringing in Hancock on Thursday as well as the city participates in the National Park Services initiative, “Bells Across The Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox” commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

The event will take place at Lakeside Cemetery at 3:15p.m. with a brief ceremony honoring the eleven Civil War veterans laid to rest there by the ringing of hand bells.

The commemoration will then proceed to the Church of the Resurrection where hand bells will again be rung for a Civil War veteran buried in the Catholic Cemetery under the church.

The ceremony will conclude at Hancock City Hall…where the bell will be rung 13 times, once for each of the twelve Civil War veterans known to be buried within the city and once more for all who served in or were affected by the conflict.

The Salvation Army of Hancock is providing a limited number of hand bells but attendees are encouraged to bring their own if possible.
