26-year-old Nicholas Edwards of Hancock was sentenced in Houghton County Circuit Court Friday after entering a plea agreement in December.
Edwards pled guilty to a 10 year felony counterfeiting charge and a 5-year attempted counterfeiting charge. The plea agreement stipulates that his sentences would run concurrently and he would not spend more than eight months in the county jail.
Prosecuting attorney Michael Makinen stated in court that Edwards is lucky the case didn’t end up in the hands of federal agents.
Defense attorney David Gemignani stated that his client has a bright future and has a lot going for him.
Edwards himself said he regrets the crime and that he would be going into his 3rd year as a computer engineering major at Michigan Tech.
For his possession of counterfeit money charge, Edwards was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months probation and 8 months incarceration in the Houghton County Jail with credit for 54 days served.
For the attempted counterfeiting charge, Edwards was sentenced to 1 and a half years probation and 6 months incarceration in the Houghton County Jail with credit for 38 days served.
On the terms of the plea agreement, these sentences will be served concurrently.
