Group Calls For More Attention To Children Of Incarcerated Parents

A new report out this morning shows nearly 230,000 children in Michigan have had a parent in jail.

Researchers from the Annie Casey Foundation say incarceration continues to devastate families of color.

Black kids are seven times more likely and Latino kids are three times more likely to have a parent in jail when compared to white kids.

The Kids Count project director at the Michigan League for Public Policy says outdated corrections policies have been hurting our economy and state budget and the report shows they are doing the same to families and kids.

The report recommends ensuring children are supported while parents are behind bars, connecting parents who have gotten out of jail to jobs and strengthening cities to promote family stability and opportunity in areas disproportionately affected by incarceration.
