– Houghton shut out Escanaba 4-0.

– Calumet plays at Kingsford.
– Hancock entertains Marquette. Face-off is at noon at the Houghton County Arena.

In girls’ high school basketball Friday night, Houghton got past Kingsford 40-34 in overtime.

In boys action Friday night…
– Houghton extended its lead in the WestPAC to two games with a 52-32 victory over second-place Calumet. Brad Ohtonen’s 10 points led a balanced scoring attack for the Gremlins, who took an early lead, and were never challenged. Jack Hyrkas lead the Copper Kings with 11. – Chassell defeated Hancock 61-41.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 71-35 win over Dollar Bay 71-35.
– Jeffers lost a 45-43 heartbreaker at Watersmeet.
– L’Anse defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 62-47.
– Republic-Michigamme downed Baraga 62-51.

MTU Hockey Blanks UAH
Jamie Phillips turned in his third shutout of the season, as the Michigan Tech hockey team blanked Alabama-Birmingham 5-0 Friday night. Five different Huskies scored, starting with Alex Petain’s power play goal early in the second period. The Huskies outshot the Chargers 37-20. Those teams play again tonight at MacInnes Arena. Face-off is at 7:07. See video highlights of Friday’s game here.

Both Tech basketball teams entertain Lake Superior State today. The women’s game begins at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00, at the SDC.

NMU Downs Alaska
Derek Dun earned his first career victory in goal, as Nortehrn Michigan outpointed Alaska-Anchorage 5-3 Friday night. The sophomore got the surprise appearance because regular netminder Mathias Dahlstrom was injured in a collision just two minutes into the game. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

Both Northern basketball teams host Northwood this afternoon.

Finlandia Hockey Falls
The Finlandia men’s hockey team lost 6-2 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday night. The Lions trailed just 2-1 at the close of the first period, after a goal by Devin Smith, but the Raiders scored two goals in the second period, and two more in the third to put the game away. Those teams play again this afternoon in Milwaukee.

The Lions’ women’s hockey team remained winless, falling 8-0 to Lake Forest College Friday night. The Foresters outshot the Lions 29-10. Finlandia will entertain Adrian College this afternoon at 3:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team hosts Wisconsin-Marinette this afternoon. Tip-off is at 2:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

The Calumet Wolverines pounded the Monroe Blues 13-2 Friday night. The Wolverines will skate at Eagle River tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Monroe Blues tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL – Red Wings to Play Afternoon Game
The Red Wings host the Islanders this afternoon. Faceoff is at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

There may be some goaltending help on the way for the Red Wings. Jonas Gustavsson will make a conditioning start with the Grand Rapids Griffins tonight. It will be Gustavsson’s first game in three months, as he’s worked to recover from a separated shoulder. If things go well, he could join the Wings next week. Third-string goalie Petr Mrazek has been filling in because of injuries to Gustavsson and starter Jimmy Howard.

NBA – Pistons Prepare for Rockets
The Pistons host the Rockets tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
