In high school football Friday night…
– Houghton spotted Ironwood a 6-0 lead, then wore down the understaffed Red Devils and took a 42 – 6 victory. Quentin Stachowiak responded to the early touchdown with a 53 yard run and the Gremlins never looked back. Samuel Collaer had touchdown runs of 10, 17, and one yard. Nicholas Weingarten caught a 26-yard pass from Jordan Reynolds to close the scoring. At 3-0, Houghton is off to its best start since 2001.
– In their first meeting since 1997, Calumet edged Hurley 26-20 in overtime.
– Hancock got past Northland Pines 14-7.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 18-16 – see video highlights of the game here.
– Ewen-Trout Creek ripped Baraga 52-16.
– Ontonagon lost to North Central 68-36.
Today, Lake Linden-Hubbell faces Iowa-Grant High School from Livingston, Wisconsin. The game will be played at Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

In cross country, Hancock runs at the Superior Central Invitational today.
MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team opened the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota State-Moorhead Friday afternoon, and a 3-2 win over Upper Iowa Friday evening. The Huskies will continue play against St. Cloud State this afternoon, and Minnesota-Duluth this evening.
Jacqueline Mielke’s goal in the 75th minute lifted the MTU soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Minnesota-Duluth Friday night. Kirsen Hudak made six saves to preserve the shutout. Tech plays at Bemidji State tomorrow afternoon.
The Tech women’s tennis team opened its season with a 5-4 victory at Ferris State Friday afternoon. The Huskies play at Grand Valley State this morning.
The Tech football team hosts Ferris State today. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Angelo State this afternoon.
Finlandia
At the Northland College Tournament in Ashland on Friday, the Finlandia University volleyball team fell 3-0 to Wisconsin-Superior this morning, and 3-0 to Wisconsin-Stout Friday afternoon. The Lions continue play in Ashland against Wisconsin-River Falls this afternoon, and the host team tonight.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team lost to 3-0 to Capital University Columbus, Ohio, on Friday. to face Capital University this evening. The Lions will play at Otterbein University tomorrow.
The Finlandia women’s soccer team has the weekend off.
The Finlandia football team plays at Lawrence University today.
MLB
Victor Martinez’ home run in the bottom of the eighth inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Friday night. Martinez’ blow came just a half-inning after the Orioles had tied the game with a rally against Justin Wilson. Ironically, Wilson earned the win. Michael Fulmer pitched seven strong innings for Detroit, giving up two runs on just three hits. J.D. Martinez had three hits and drove in two runs.
The Tigers host the Orioles again tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will return from the disabled list to start for Detroit. Ubaldo Jimenez will counter for Baltimore. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The victory moved Detroit into a tie with Baltimore for the final American League wild card playoff berth. Cleveland also won yesterday, and still leads Detroit by six games in the American League Central Division.
Jimmy Nelson gave up two two-run homers in the fourth inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 last night. Scooter Gennett hit a two-run shot for the Brewers.
The Brewers continue that set against the Cardinals in St. Louis tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Adam Wainwright.
NFL
The Detroit Lions open their season tomorrow afternoon at Indianapolis. Kickoff is at 4:25. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
On Friday, the Lions announced that they had agreed to contract extensions with punter Sam Martin and running back Theo Riddick. Terms were not officially announced. ESPN reported that Martin’s deal is for four years, and is worth more than 13-million dollars. NFL Network said that Riddick’s agreement is for three years at 12.75-million dollars.
The Packers start their season at Jacksonville tomorrow – that’s a 1:00 game.
