A traffic light will be installed at the entrance of M-26 and Walmart in Houghton this year.
Houghton City Manager Eric Waara informed the city council at their regular meeting Wednesday that bids for the project will be accepted in August.
Construction will take place in September or October. The cost of the project is expected to be around $150,000, which will be paid by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
A memorial ruck is in the works to honor Michigan Tech alumnus Justin Fitch, who passed away last October after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 33 years old.
Fitch was in Tech’s ROTC and was deployed to Iraq twice before returning and becoming a spokesperson for the Active Heroes Foundation, a group dedicated to eliminating suicide among active military service personnel and veterans.
Tech student Grant Beatus of Sigma Phi Epsilon asked the city council for their approval to hold the ruck in October.
A new Houghton Farmer’s Market is set to begin in June. The market will exclusively focus on grown products and will be held Tuesday afternoons in the downtown area. An exact location is yet to be determined.
The dates for the Copper Country Band have been released. The all-inclusive music ensemble will perform at the Kestner Waterfront Park band shell Tuesday nights in July starting at 7pm.
A pair of public hearings for the Zoning Board of Appeals have been set for May 11th at 5:30. One is to look at the expansion of the Houghton County Jail and Sheriff’s Office, which is part of the kitchen remodeling project.
The other is for a sign variance for the upcoming O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store, which will be opening soon in the former Napa Auto Parts location in Houghton.
The business sector had even more activity–a new Michigan Made store will be holding a grand opening event on April 30th and the city is anticipating the opening of a new comic book store, Black Ice Comics.
Biggby’s Coffee will be coming to Houghton soon and the rebranding of the Travelodge hotel into a Quality Inn & Suites is underway.
And finally, the council approved the application for a Class C Redevelopment Liquor License for Houghton Brewing Co., who are looking to open a tap and wine room in the downtown. Plans to actually brew beer on location are currently on hold.
