Canada’s Joint Review Panel on the Deep Geologic Repository has recommended the construction of a permanent Canadian nuclear waste repository on the shores of Lake Huron.
If this goes forward, more than 7 million cubic feet of nuclear waste would be buried at the site.
The report says the low level nuclear waste site is not likely to cause significant environmental effects, including to Lake Huron.
The Canadian government will now review the report and decide if the project will proceed.
The report was immediately criticized by some officials in Michigan.
Congressman Dan Benishek was among those in opposition to the plan calling it “unacceptable” and that burying nuclear waste this close to Lake Huron is not the answer to finding a long-term storage solution.
Benishek has co-sponsored a resolution calling on President Obama and the Secretary of State to stop the Canadian government from storing nuclear waste in the Great Lakes basin.
Supporters of the site location say it’s a safe spot because of suitable geology.
