Historically low ice coverage in the Great Lakes will allow the shipping season to start earlier than usual. The Soo Locks will officially open the Poe Lock to all marine traffic at 6 pm March 22nd. Marking the start of the Great Lakes shipping season. The sipping industry requested an early season at the urge of major steel producers. For winter repairs the Soo Locks had about 10 weeks to work after the last boat came through on January 16th.
