The Great Lakes shipping season kicked off this week with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The lock system, which allows travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, opened two weeks early due to warmer weather.
It’s the 58th shipping season for the system that supports more than 227,000 jobs and $35 billion in economic activity, according to the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation.
The Soo Locks, which is part of the system, open Friday.
