Great Lakes Cruising Club Comes to Houghton for Lake Superior Rally

Build it and they will come. Today and tomorrow, area resident may notice some large boats docked by the new Houghton pier. This weekend the Great Lakes Cruising Club will host the lake superior rally in Houghton, thanks in large part to the new pier. The club’s Treasurer, Niels Jensen, says that those visiting the area are excited to come, and though the rally this weekend will be smaller, it could not happen without the right amount of space.

“The fact of the matter is when we have an event, we need dock space. Or we need and anchorage big enough. And it’s always a problem. For the bigger events we have the rendezvous. For that big event we need dock space for 75 boats. And we often have it in places like Little Current, or Duluth. I particularly like Houghton-Hancock. I’ve been here many times. And I’m very pleased to see the improvements you’ve made along the waterfront.” – Niels Jensen, Treasurer & Past Commodore, Great Lakes Cruising Club

During the pandemic the over one hundred year old cruising club was hit hard by an inability to hold their large sailing regattas. With many members tending to be older, the club has been cautious to hold events again. And is excited to start up again

“We really try to encourage people to go out and enjoy the great lakes. I mentioned to you, I am from Copenhagen, Denmark, and I consider this to be a far away and exotic place to go sailing. And it really is. The Great Lakes, Lake Superior, there is so much to do and see up here, and there’s nothing like it in the world. It really is unique.” – Niels Jensen, Treasurer & Past Commodore, Great Lakes Cruising Club

The Great Lakes Cruising Club has over 2500 world wide members. To this day the club continues it’s main mission to promote sailing and cruising in the great lakes.
